SAN RAFAEL, California (July 12, 2023): US Sports Camps, the official provider of Nike Sports Camps, is renewing its commitment to make youth sports more accessible by doubling down on its Play Without Limits Project (PWLP) in 2023. Following the success of the program’s inaugural season, the PWLP will award 133 full-tuition camp scholarships to under-resourced athletes ages 8 to 18 this summer. This marks a more than 50% increase in scholarships from a year ago.
“Last year, we gave 80 boys and girls the chance to learn from the nation’s top coaches, enhance their skills, and make memories that will last a lifetime,” said Ian Hamilton, executive director of the PWLP. “We’re offering even more scholarships this summer and hope to send thousands of kids to camp in the coming years.”
The PWLP is delivering full-tuition camp scholarships to campers in New York, Chicago and East Palo Alto, Calif. through each city’s respective Boys & Girls Club chapters. It’s also awarding scholarships through CASA DC (Washington, D.C.), the Riverside School for the Deaf (Riverside, Calif.), Portland Tennis & Education (Portland, Ore.), and Communities In Schools (Atlanta). In addition, the PWLP is teaming up with Nike Social & Community Impact to deliver scholarships to youth in Los Angeles served by the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks as part of Made to Play, Nike’s global commitment to get kids moving. Finally, the PWLP is making a donation to help facilitate a Nike Swim Camp for LeBron James’ I PROMISE School in Akron, Ohio. Through these efforts, the PWLP seeks to remove the socioeconomic, geographic, and physical barriers that prevent kids from accessing sport and educational opportunities, leveling the playing field for all.
Sports participation has been linked to higher self-esteem, better academic performance, and healthier decision-making in teens. This makes expanded access to summer sports camps even more important. Through the PWLP, kids can develop their skills under best-in-class coaches and learn healthy habits. The PWLP also plans on expanding access for children with disabilities through adaptive camps, including wheelchair tennis, surf, and BMX camps, as well as camps for youth with hearing impairments.
The PWLP is a US Sports Camps employee-driven initiative, directed by an Employee Advisory Council spread across five committees. The PWLP invites organizations and individuals with a shared desire to level the playing field to join them.
